New York climate and when to go New York

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Climate

New York's climate can be divided into four seasons. It has a humid continental climate, with cold winters and hot, moist summers. The city's coastal location ensures a more moderate climate, and daytime temperatures generally stay above freezing point. Snow is common in winter, but the amount varies, and winter rain is common. Spring in New York is pleasantly warm, and the weather heats up to temperatures of around 25-30°C by mid-May. Summers are generally hot and humid.

When to go

Summer or winter, there is always something on in New York City, so in a way there's no real "best" time to go. Generally the nicest time to visit New York is from mid-September to mid-November, along with all of May and early June. New York is a nonstop holiday party from early December through the start of the New Year. Celebrations of the season abound in festive holiday windows and events like the lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular -- not to mention those wonderful seasonal sales that make New York a holiday shopping bonanza.
